Coffee kiosk set for raised uMhlanga boardwalk

Once the boardwalk is complete visitors will safely be able to experience the coastal forest life while having negligible environmental impact on the reserve.

THOSE using the new uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve raised boardwalk will soon be able to have a cup of coffee at its newest kiosk.

The boardwalk which is now 161 metres in length, will be 1km long once completed.

Made from recycled plastic, the raised, wheelchair-friendly boardwalk’s design will provide viewing decks overlooking the beach and lagoon and formalised access points from the boardwalk onto the beach.

The project is approved by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (KZN EDTEA).

Brian Wright of the uMhlanga UIP said construction on the reserve’s boardwalk recommenced recently.

“The construction has now reached the reserve’s old ablution facility. This building will be upgraded into a coffee kiosk where walkers and runners can enjoy a cuppa in the forest. We’d like to extend a big thank you to the uMhlanga Sands Resort and Cabana Beach Resort for their very generous donations of R25 000 each. Once the boardwalk is complete visitors will safely be able to experience the amazing coastal forest life while having negligible environmental impact on this incredible natural asset,” he said.
