Report side effects of chemical plant smoke, says ward 35 councillor

If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms due to the chemical smoke, ensure that you report these symptoms to the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER).

IF you’re living in the north Durban areas, by now you would know about the UPL chemical factory in Cornubia that was set alight by looters last week.

Burning and itchy eyes and coughing are some of the symptoms that residents say they have experienced.

Others reported that the fumes were unpleasant.

The fire also polluted beaches and rivers in the uMhlanga and eMdloti areas. Although the fire has been extinguished, the smoulder is still present.

If you’re experiencing any of the above mentioned symptoms due to the chemical smoke, ensure that you report these symptoms to the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER).

Ward 35 councillor, Nicole Bollman, said the proper channel has to be used to lodge a complaint.

“I encourage those affected by the fumes to use the proper channel, such as the Centre for Environmental Rights website to report any symptoms you may feel,” she said.

You can lodge your complaint by visiting www.cer.org.za
