Malacca Road Informal Settlement man set alight, suspect arrested

It is alleged that three suspects forced the two men into the taxi and drove with them to a garage. They then bought petrol and set one of the victims alight.

A 24-YEAR-OLD man appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court recently for attempted murder after he allegedly set a man alight in June. 

The 23-year-old victim, from the Malacca Road informal settlement, near Greenwood Park, was with another man at the time but he managed to escape the torching.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said the incident dates back to June 14 when the two men were forced into a taxi at Mathambo’s settlement in Greenwood Park.

“It is alleged that three suspects forced the two men into the taxi and drove with them to a garage. They then bought petrol and set one of the victims alight. The second victim managed to run for help and the burning victim was rushed to hospital for medical attention,” she said.

It has been reported that the victim is still recovering in Addington Hospital in Durban.

“The case was postponed to July 16,” she said.
