WATCH: Snake gets trapped in manhole after eating rat in Durban North

Jason Arnold, a Durban snake rescuer, said the snake was a harmless, adult female brown house snake.

TWO friends taking their daily walk in Durban North stumbled across a squirmy find yesterday, which actually turned out to be harmless.

Anna Accolla and Denise Bouah usually walk on the beach, but changed their plans, opting for a road walk along Waterkant Road.

During their walk, they saw a snake stuck in a stormwater drain, trying to free itself.

“I noticed the snake first and screamed for Denise to come see. She had Jason the snake catcher’s number so she contacted him. He advised us to try and free it using a stick, but I said I was not going to go anywhere near it. He then came and rescued the snake,” said Accolla.

Jason Arnold, a Durban North snake rescuer, said the snake was a harmless, adult female brown house snake who had eaten a rat and got stuck in the hole as a result.

“While she was stuck in the drain, she injured herself and has a few cuts and bruises. I am keeping her with me and treating her wounds to make sure they don’t become infected. Once she digests the meal, and I am hoping that she does, and her wounds heal, I will release her,” said Arnold.

He said that he hopes the snake doesn’t regurgitate the meal as it must have used up a lot of energy to consume the rat.

“I’m happy nobody injured her or tried to kill her because I am sure someone other then the women who were walking must have seen her stuck,” he said.

Arnold added that it would take the snake about week and a half to digest the rat.
