Local paramedic notices uptake in Covid-19 cases across Durban

While Gauteng is currently the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak, there are worrying signs of a spike in infections in KZN, said Kyle van Reenen.

SUNNINGDALE resident and paramedic at Emer-G-Med, Kyle van Reenen, has warned that there are worrying signs of what appears to be a sustained increase in the Covid-19 infection rates in the province.

This comes after the Department of Health confirmed 11 093 new cases detected over a 24 hour period.

While Gauteng is currently the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak, there are worrying signs of a spike in infections in KZN, says van Reenen.

“Over the last week we’ve seen a notable increase in Covid-19 cases. At least 60 per cent of our case volumes are related to Covid and we are seeing a worrying trend of residents across greater Durban being complacent and not adhering to protocols. We have responded to a few critical cases that required resuscitation efforts from Bluff to Durban North to the upper Highway area.

“We need to understand and play our part in curbing the infection rate. We may not have reached the third wave in KZN yet, but we should not compromise on compliance with Covid-19 protocols. Healthcare workers and emergency personnel are doing the best they can but this battle requires people to adhere to rules more stringently,” he said.

KZN is currently ranked as the fourth highest in terms of fatalities countrywide, following Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Western Cape.

On Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal premier, Sihle Zikalala, raised his concerns over the rising infection rate in various parts of the country.

“Each and every one of us, in our little corner wherever we are, should be making sure that we contribute towards ensuring that the numbers that we are seeing do not amount to a calm before the storm. The past two waves of Covid-19 have shown us how brutal and vicious Covid-19 can be. It remains crucial for us to adhere to the non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as wearing of masks; maintaining social distancing; and washing our hands regularly with soap and water,” he said.
