Beware of possible scammer in Durban North

After telling the man that she did not believe him, he became arrogant and cut the call.

“PAY R1 500 or your electricity will be disconnected.”

This is what two Durban North residents were told over the phone last week when a man tried to scam them.

Nicole van der Merwe, who owns a guesthouse, said she knew it was a scam from the get-go but would like to warn others of the incident.

“He called on Friday and didn’t give me a name, but said he was calling from the eThekwini Municipality and that a team was on the way to disconnect my electricity because the meter had been tampered with. If I paid R1500 he would stop the team from coming over and I would have electricity for the weekend. They would then come on Monday,” she said.

After telling the man that she did not believe him, he became arrogant and cut the call. Van der Merwe immediately notified her security company who rushed to her guesthouse and patrolled the area for hours.

“Thankfully the man did not show up. I just want to warn others to not fall prey to this scam,” she said.

Another resident, who was also too clever for the scammer spoke to Northglen News about his experience.
