Durban North NPO empowers youth with bursary programme

This year, 30 students have a place in the lecture halls after successfully completing the bursary programme’s application and interview process.

DURBAN North based NPO, The Domino Foundation has empowered 30 young people through its bursary programme which offers youth the opportunity to further their studies.

Through the programme, The foundation is funding tertiary qualifications, living and travel allowances as well as educational resources for each of their candidates.

Nobuhle Ndlovu, Domino’s newly-appointed skills development co-ordinator, said, “We are so excited to have a range of people on the programme, from adult matric to honours students. Most of the students will be attending UKZN, UNISA, DUT and independent school and tertiary institute, Anchorlite College.”

Ndlovu was recently a beneficiary of the programme, completing her B Ed degree at UKZN. Now, with her degree in her pocket, she is able to guide students through the challenges of tertiary education.

“In addition to the all-important area of finances, we have a mentorship programme which helps students transition from school to college and tracks their progress,” she said.

Ndlovu said this year, there are five students on the programme who are disabled in some way. “I am excited to be able to help people who have challenges to overcome their hurdles and secure their futures,” she added. One of the students in the programme is Sabelo Zulu. “There was no way in which my family could have paid for me to study music. The bursary programme has made me realise that dreams can come true,” he said.
