Body of drowned man recovered at Blue Lagoon

The man was swept away by strong currents in the Blue Lagoon area and his body was eventually recovered after a search by participants from #CleanBlueLagoon and rescue personnel.

A MAN, believed to be in his 20s, drowned while swimming near the uMgeni River mouth on Saturday morning.

The man was swept away by strong currents in the Blue Lagoon area and his body was eventually recovered after a search by participants from #CleanBlueLagoon and rescue personnel.

Denise Mc Creadie, one of the organisers of the clean-up, said the man had jumped into the water from the Blue Lagoon side when he got into difficulty.

“Learners from Our Lady of Fatima school who were part of the clean-up on the Beachwood Mangroves side noticed the man in difficulty and immediately called for help. I instinctively ran and jumped into the water looking for him, a cyclist from the Blue Lagoon side also jumped in to search for him but the water was too murky to see anything.

“I was surprised by the strength of the current and we predicted he’d been washed out to sea. We then contacted Metro Police Search and Rescue, SAPS Search and Rescue and eThekwini Lifeguards. They arrived within minutes and the search continued. Eventually the current started to come back and another participant of the clean-up, Wentzel Van Heerden, spotted the body, and in no time at all had pulled the swimmer out of the ocean. Unfortunately, he had been under for over 20 minutes and he had already passed,” she explained.

Mc Creadie praised the efforts of all those involved for their efforts in trying to save the man’s life.
