Firwood Road Pool may only reopen in 2023 says councillor

The municipal pool was closed in July 2017 with the City hoping to attend to a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.

RESIDENTS are no closer to finding out when the Firwood Road pool in Effingham will reopen.

The municipal pool was closed in July 2017 with the City hoping to attend to a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.

According to local ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, attending a full council meeting last year, the pool would only reopen in 2023.

“We’ve already had three years without any action being taken and now residents will have a further two years without a pool. Firwood Road pool has served the community for a number of years. It’s a great facility and seeing it empty makes me angry and frustrated. Initially the City issued a statement saying the facility would reopen in 2021 but Covid-19 and other issues meant this would not be possible.

“I have been engaging with senior officials and trying to hold a meeting to discuss the future of the pool but I was brushed off. It was only at a full council meeting when I submitted questions on what the future holds that I was informed the pool would only be repaired by 2023. This could be pushed further back due to the pandemic and funding issues. This is devastating news for the residents and I. I’ve had so many residents enquire when will Firwood Road Pool be reopened. It’s a huge disappointment about the pool as the community view Firwood Road Pool as an asset to the area,” he said.

The City did not respond to questions at the time of going to print.
