Sea Cow Lake Road surface starts to deteriorate yet again
After being repaired earlier this year, two manhole covers have now begun to collapse and a large pothole has begun to form near Umgeni Iron Works prompting concern for motorists and pedestrians alike.
WARD 34 councillor, Bobby Maharajh has voiced his concern about the gradual deterioration of a section of Sea Cow Lake Road.
The section in question is between Chris Hani Road (North Coast) and Sea Cow Lake Road, which was only repaired in June this year.
Prior to repair and rehabilitation, a sewage and water leak flooded the road surface, leaving the road riddled with potholes which had, in turn, damaged vehicles.
Now however, Maharajh said two manhole covers have begun to collapse and a large pothole has begun to form near Umgeni Iron Works, prompting concern for motorists and pedestrians alike.

“We were all breathing a sigh of relief when the road surface was repaired earlier this year but now similar issues have begun creeping in. Besides the collapsing manhole covers, the surface of the road has also worsened and that is a problem for motorists. You can easily buckle a rim or damage your tyre where the pothole has formed. It also is a concern that some motorists are having to swerve to avoid the pothole and either drive partially in the opposite lane or creeping closer to the pavement putting pedestrians at risk,” he said.
Maharajh said he would be in touch with senior officials within the City’s Roads and Stormwater Department.
“If the problem isn’t dealt with decisively and timeously the road surface will worsen and be a bigger hazard for motorists,” he explained.
