WATCH: Festive food hampers delivered to Briardene community

The delivery was organised by Durban North based NPO, The Seed Fund.

THE Christmas spirit was shown as 100 food hampers were delivered to the Briardene Informal Settlement recently. The delivery was organised by Durban North based NPO, The Seed Fund and packed and delivered by Boxer Supestores.

Don Shange, who has lived in the settlement for 15 years said the community appreciated the donation.

“We have had a bit of relief since the conditions of lockdown have lifted but some of the people are still not working. And some of us did not receive SASSA grants, so these donations will make a huge impact in our lives. When and organisation like The Seed Fund works with us it inspires us to start our organisations that can partner with them in order to do good. We don’t except to always be given donations we also want to try to assist ourselves and then we can assist other communities as well,” he said.

Briardene resident, Happiness Mkwanazi “I am very happy that the Briardene community has been included. We appreciate this donation- this shows us that it’s Christmas time,” she said.

Arianne Hayes-Hill, founder of the Seed Fund said they worked with Ward 36 Councillor Shontel de Boer to during the Covid-19 pandemic to distribute food hampers in the area. After reading an article about the Bhambayi Project hamper donation in the Northglen News, Hayes-hill decided to reach out to Boxer Super Stores which had assisted them in packing the hampers.

“For us, it’s about expanding our reach. We have been focused primarily on the Malacca Road informal Settlement, but it’s always been our dream that that would be a catalyst for us to start reaching out. Our organisation is now three years old and we are beginning to see the need out there and we’ve got the recourses and the capacity to be able to help,” she said.

Jason McCall, marketing manager for Boxer Super Stores said: “If there is some way we can assist an organisation with creating these hampers, Boxer prides itself with being able to offer this service. We wouldn’t be anything without the Northglen News and other Caxton papers really making a difference and writing these stories so other people can help.”
