Mount Edgecombe trainer raises more than 40k for charity

Not only did Chris Dranias lift a whopping 345kgs, he also raised R42290 for a local children's home.

MOUNT Edgecombe resident and personal trainer, Chris Dranias didn’t just raise the bar, he raised over R40 000 for the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre at a recent Glenhills powerlifting fundraiser.

He also attempted to lift 405 kgs in the deadlift category, to break the world record. Dranias said he was inspired to raise money for charity during lockdown.

“I have been training all year to lift in a big competition, SA champs, which would have taken place in Durban in August. When this got scrapped because of Covid-19, I decided to do something positive for charity,” he said.

While Dranias did not break the record, he raised a lot of money for a good cause and lifted a whopping 345kgs.

“It was the most money ever raised for the centre. Powerlifting is not a mainstream sport so the fact that so many people supported was really encouraging. I didn’t manage to break the record- in power lifting sometimes it’s your day and sometimes it’s not,” he said.

According to Nicolette Modicka of The Durban Child and Youth Care Centre, Dranias had raised a total of R41 150 at the time of the cheque handover at the event and a further R1140 was donated towards the initiative later on, bringing the total to R42290.

“Words are not enough to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Chris for the incredible kindness and compassion he has shown to us at this time,” she said.

Chris is an example of how an individual who is determined to do good, can do great things. Despite the closure of our Siyakhula Rehabilitation Centre this year, we still have a huge operational shortfall of R4,9million in which we had to hold fundraisers for.

We are forever grateful to our community of friends and family that have helped us at a time when it was most difficult to do so. We have a total of R1,5million is which we still need to raise to continue providing care and support to vulnerable children.

Chris has literally raised the bar for individuals, proving that everyone can make a difference,” added Modika.
