Soccer team ‘scores’ new kits for Christmas in Glenhills

The soccer club meets every week at the Rinaldo Road park, where coach, Siphamandla Dlamini offers mentorship to the boys.

GLENHILLS based NPO, Each One Reach 1.org hosted a soccer day for boys from their sports mentorship programme which supports the Zizi Striking Storm Football Club. Children from the club enjoyed a day of soccer matches at Action Cricket arena on Rinaldo Road on Saturday, 12 December. This formed part of their year end, Christmas party which included new soccer kits for the boys.

In July, Each One Reach 1.org founder, Eshia Govender appealed to the Durban North community to donate soccer kits to the sports mentorship programme.

“Each One Reach 1.org is humbled to have been given the opportunity to holistically train with these young men over the past year and half. Coach has such passion for soccer but just needed a mentor. We used this as an opportunity to nurture his growth as well,” said Govender.

She added this was the first time the boys from the soccer team had the chance to play indoor soccer.

The soccer club meets every week at the Rinaldo Road park, where coach, Siphamandla Dlamini offers mentorship to the boys. He said he started the club in 2017 to offer the youth a healthy alternative to substance abuse.

“It’s a dream come true to receive these soccer kits. So far, God has kept us safe through the Covid-19 pandemic. For us, loving the sport and giving so much time to it, it’s great to see so much being put back into the community and to see the support and the love from Each One Reach 1.org. They motivate us and others. With the soccer jerseys, the boys feel like they are part of a family. Today we are going to play some sports and uplift the boys by talking to them and teaching them,” said Dlamini.

Govender thanked the Each One Reach 1.org sponsors for their time and funds.

“We were able to donate registration, kits, boots, equipment, school stationery and weekly training meals as well as fuel for back and forth transportation. One does not need a lot of money to lend a helping hand, just start with sharing your time. We will be training volunteers for all our teen programmes this January. Please contact us if you would like to get involved. As we self-fund, we use our private vehicles for all our programs. We are looking for sponsorship of a previously-loved minibus to help with transportation of our beneficiaries, volunteers and distribution of hampers and hot meals. If you would like to partner in any way, please contact us,” she said.
