VIDEO: 16 days of activism campaign launched in Glenhills

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign aims to end gender based violence and child abuse.

DURBAN NORTH based NPO, The Seed Fund hopes to combat fear with a campaign to commemorate 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children which runs from 25 November until 10 December.

“The name of the campaign is #Angisabi which means, ‘I am not afraid’. We are working on prevention of gender-based violence and child abuse,” said Neil Stephen of The Seed Fund.

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign aims to end gender based violence.

“The success of this campaign rests on our daily individual and collective actions to safeguard our society against this cycle of abuse,” government said in a statement on the Parlimentary website.

On the website, abuse is defined as any form of behaviour that causes fear, bodily harm or cohesion.

“It stems from the low status of women in the home and in society. It happens when men abuse power and positions of authority in order to control women and children,” reads the site.

The #Angisabi campaign will also raise awareness about abuse among children.

“During the campaign we will invite social services to come and talk to the children. We will host workshops as well. The Jes Foord Foundation has already been coming here to do training with the children,” said Stephen.

Jes Foord, founder of The Jes Foord Foundation (JFF) said they partnered with The Seed Fund to create awareness on what to do after sexual assault and what support is available.

“Our Awareness Facilitators give a very passionate message of how to use your voice as a defence mechanism, the importance of speaking out and ensuring the children have a better understanding of consent, no means no. We love partnering with NGO’s like The Seed Fund who’s heart for their community is so great,” said Foord.

The Seed Fund is looking for funding to help them continue this work in other areas.

While The Seed Fund typically hosts a clean-up on Mandela Day, Hayes-Hill said the seedling donation has had a lasting effect, with benefits that far surpass previous clean-ups. “Two days later the place would have been untidy again, but when I look at these patches of land that are being allocated for vegetable gardens, I think, this would have been another shack,” she said.
