Sewage left after leak fixed in Briardene

Sewage leaks have been ongoing on Krishna Road.

A RESIDENT from the Briardene Informal Settlement raised concerns after sewage was left on the pavement along Krishna Road when a sewage leak was fixed recently.

Sewage leaks have been ongoing on Krishna Road with new leaks springing up every few months, said Happiness Mkwanazi, who has been a resident in the area since 2005.

“In a year, there is a sewage leak every four to six months- it always keeps coming back. They send the contractors to come and fix it, they drain the sewer but they don’t clean the pavement so the smell is still bad in our area. We are not happy about that,” she said.

Acting Ward Councillor for the area, Shontel De Boer said the leak sprung up about three weeks ago before it was fixed on 4 November.

“After weeks of reporting and esculating the complaint, it was fixed. This is not the first time a sewage leak has been fixed but the area has not been cleaned. I am not sure if the contractors are not paid to do clean ups. I’ve sent a complaint through but haven’t received a response yet,” she said.

De Boer added that the road is a thoroughfare for taxis, motorists and pedestrians who are forced to walk or drive through the unsanitary road.

“The stench is quite unbearable and to see the sewage on the road where people drive through it and people have to walk through it to go to work in the mornings-it’s unacceptable,” she said.

The eThekwini Municipality did not send their comment at the time this article was published.
