Getaway vehicles from Gateway jewellery robbery recovered

The vehicles, a white VW Tiguan and a silver Ford Kuga, were recovered by Tracker near Marshall Dam in Cornubia just hours after the robbery.

TWO vehicles used by armed suspects in the jewellery store robbery at Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Sunday were recovered just hours later.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, the vehicles, a white VW Tiguan and a silver Ford Kuga, were recovered by Tracker near Marshall Dam in Cornubia.

“Unfortunately the suspects are still on the loose but a bullet casing was recovered in one of the vehicles. Through our investigations we’ve discovered the one of the vehicles had been stolen in a hijacking in Newlands, while the bakkie was stolen in a house break-in in uMhlali,” he said.

Speaking on the armed robbery, Deokaran said approximately seven suspects held up staff at Narandas Jewellers at Gateway just before 10am on Sunday.

“The suspects were all armed with pistols and one of the suspects had a rifle with him. They used hammers to smash the glass casings making off with various items of value,” he said.

Though police could not confirm, it is believed that suspects made off with more than R3-million worth of jewellery.
