Two suspects arrested for Redhill cable theft

Detectives investigating the case are profiling the suspects and trying to link them to other cases of theft and damage to state property.

TWO suspects were arrested after they were caught with about 10 metres of copper cable in their possession on Chris Hani (North Coast) Road on Sunday, 25 October at about 9am.

Both suspects, aged 22 and 23, were taken to Greenwood Park SAPS, charged and detained.

This follows a spate of cable theft in the area with another suspect arrested on Anthony Road in uMgeni Park on Monday.

“Detectives investigating the case are profiling the suspects and trying to link them to other cases of theft and damage to state property. Proactive policing has brought two more criminals to book,” said spokesperson for Greenwood Park SAPS, Captain Jerome Slater. 

According to Slater, members of Marshall Security were patrolling in Redhill near the railway station, when they spotted two men struggling to carrying a black sports bag.

“They approached with caution and noticed the said bag to be containing about 10 metres of industrial copper cables. The two suspects  tried to flee but were apprehended and placed under arrest for being in possession of suspected stolen property. On closer inspection, a hacksaw and spanners were found in the bag which was used to remove the cables from the railway station premises,” he said.

The suspects made their first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 October.
