Pedestrian robbed on uMhlanga footbridge

The victim was walking towards the uMhlanga taxi rank when he was held up at gunpoint.

DURBAN North Police are investigating a case of robbery after a pedestrian was robbed of R500 in cash.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the suspect armed with a handgun robbed the 38-year-old victim who was on his way to take a taxi at Gateway last Wednesday at about 7pm.

“He was using the footbridge near the M41 and was approached by the suspect, who was armed with a firearm.”

“He demanded the victim’s valuables, of which he had R500 in cash. The suspect then fled across the footbridge towards Mount Edgecombe.

“No shots were fired and the victim was not injured in the incident. The suspect was wearing a black mask which could mean identifying him would be a challenge. A case of robbery has been opened at the station,” he said.

According to Deokaran, there have been a number of incidents scattered across the policing precinct where pedestrians have been targeted.

“While this incident occurred last week, over the course of the year we’ve had criminals target pedestrians. They often target lone pedestrians late at night or in the early hours of the morning. We are urging pedestrians, residents and visitors, where possible, to walk in groups,” he said.
