Sand, stone build-up on Effingham Road a hazard for motorists

Sand and stone wash away from the Heather Grove repair site is directly impacting Effingham Road.

THE repair of a collapsed section of Heather Grove in Redhill is affecting a section of Effingham Road. That’s according to frustrated residents who, last week, met with Northglen News to discuss the impact of the sand and stone wash away from the repair site which is directly impacting Effingham Road.

Heather Grove has been in a state of disrepair for more than two months after a burst pipe, which led to a persistent water leak, caused the lower half of the road, near the intersection to cave in.

While the water leak was repaired and some of the water pipes were re-laid, the stone and sand from the work site has begun impacting Effingham Road.

Mark Rampono said the sand and stone build-up under the railway bridge on Effingham Road is a hazard for motorists and pedestrians.

“You can see that the sand and rubble from Heather Grove has washed into the manhole and clogged the pipes. A large deposit of the sand also engulfs an entire lane of the road under the bridge. For drivers who aren’t familiar to the area and for those driving at night, this section is fraught with danger. We had previously asked the city to consider placing speed humps at this section of the road but that request was turned down.

“The manhole covers are also being pushed out of their sockets due to the build-up of water and sand which is another cause for concern. We also want to see the repair work to Heather Grove completed as this would stop the flow of sand and rubble,” he said.
