uMhlanga Ridge landscape workers robbed at gunpoint

The suspects stole a brush cutter and a leaf blower valued at R12 000.

DURBAN North SAPS are investigating a case of armed robbery after two landscape contractors were robbed of their equipment on Wednesday afternoon on Centenary Boulevard in uMhlanga Ridge.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred at about 3.10pm.

“The suspects arrived in a blue Toyota Corolla Quest and confronted the landscapers as they were trimming the grass near the outdoor gym.”

“One suspect, armed with a firearm, held the workers up, while the second suspect stole a brush cutter and a leaf blower valued at R12 000.

“The suspects then fled the scene in the getaway vehicle which had the number plates removed. There has been a number of incidents of this nature in and around uMhlanga and our policing precinct,” Deokaran said.

Neil Erasmus, who is an uMhlanga landscape contractor, said he was glad his workers weren’t harmed in the robbery.

“We’ve lost a number of machines in the last 19 months in incidents involving thefts and robberies. It started out with opportunistic thefts and has now escalated to armed robberies. It’s extremely frustrating that these incidents keep happening. I’m glad no one was injured in the incident,” Erasmus said.
