Sunningdale resident urges community to use free snake app

The app which is free to download on Google Play and App Store offers an aid to those in need of a rescuer or to help identify a snake.

SUNNINGDALE snake rescuer, Jason Arnold has urged the north Durban community to download the African Snakebite Institute (ASI) Snakes app as snake activity across the province increases.

The app which is free to download on Google Play and App Store offers an aid to those in need of a rescuer or to help identify a snake.

“With summer fast approaching, snake sightings are on the increase and this app is a valuable resource for those needing help.”

“It also helps to boost your knowledge and awareness of southern African snakes and contribute significantly to their conservation. And in the unlikely event of a snakebite, you will know exactly what first aid measures to follow.

“I often use the app and the best part of it for me is that it helps you find trained snake removers in the area you live in. I’m one of the snake removers on the app and there’s a number of snake profiles, information and resources at your fingertips. So often in our profession we have groups of snakes that are tricky to identify for those not in the know and this app helps narrow down the possible species which I may encounter on a call out,” he said.

Arnold said the best way not to get bitten by a snake was not to interfere with it. Snakes only become scared and defensive when they are put in a position where they feel their life is being threatened.
