La Lucia Baby House needs your help

The home is appealing to the community to donate cooked meals, or food such as fruit, vegetables and yogurt.

THE Covid-19 pandemic has had a knock-on effect for the La Lucia Baby House as they continue to care for six growing toddlers.

The home is appealing to the community to donate cooked meals, or food such as fruit, vegetables and yogurt.

Sheila Collins of the La Lucia Baby House said adoptions were put on hold during the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving them with a full house.

They do not usually care for growing children as the home offers temporary care to babies before they are adopted.

“Because Covid-19 put adoptions on hold, we have babies with us who are a lot older than what we usually care for. Normally we care for infants and because our baby home is small, our babies are placed in permanent homes by the time they are one or two years old. Now we have six children in our care because no one has left, they are all starting to walk and crawl. The main issue is keeping up with feeding them,” she said.

Collins said cooked meals would be especially helpful as she and her husband run the baby house without any assistance.

“We have two babies who have chronic illnesses so there are lots of hospital visits and appointments. Our focus has shifted to critical care so we really need help maintaining day-to-day operations. Cooked meals would be great or donations of fruit, vegetables and yogurt. If we get apples, we could make apple puree for the babies,” she said.
