Illegal dumping on Malacca Road continues unabated

Chairman of the Greenwood Park CPF and member of the Glenhills Ratepayers Association, Robin Candy, said  the level 2 lockdown regulations has led to an increase in illegal dumping.

ILLEGAL dumping on Ryde Place and Malacca Road has continued despite efforts to keep the area clean.

In 2015 the City spent more than a million Rand to erect a 1.5 metre high concrete palisade fence (topped with barbed wire) – spanning the length of Malacca Road and Ryde Place.

However it has failed to hamper dumpers, who, instead of throwing their rubbish into the bush around the cemetery, now use the fence boundary to dump items.

Dumping has also increased at the entrance to the Malacca Road Informal Settlement.

Chairman of the Greenwood Park CPF and member of the Glenhills Ratepayers Association, Robin Candy, said  the level 2 lockdown regulations has led to an increase in illegal dumping.

“Ryde Place and Malacca Road have long been hotspots for illegal dumping in the area. I feel the residents of the settlement are partly to blame because they stop a number of vehicles on their way to the dump to offload items on the verge.

“As the settlement has increased, the problem has worsened. Residents of the settlement will sift through the items to see what is useful and then the bulk of the items dumped at the intersection are left behind in a rubbish heap. Those illegally dumping are also taking advantage of this and just add to the rubbish heap,” he said.
