One arrested at Clicks Gateway store protest

On Monday Clicks said that it had to close 92 stores in KwaZulu-Natal and more than 400 of its stores countrywide after they were targeted by protesting.

GATEWAY Theatre of Shopping marketing manager, Michelle Shelley, has confirmed the Clicks store at the centre will remain closed until further notice.

This comes after members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) protested outside the store on Tuesday.

On Monday Clicks said that it had to close 92 stores in KwaZulu-Natal and more than 400 of its stores countrywide after they were targeted by protesting. The closures come as a result of Clicks publishing a racially insensitive hair advert on its website.

“There was no damage to any stores or mall property and one protester was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.

“After brief discussions with the Durban North SAPS the members left peacefully and without harm to any person or property. The Clicks store was closed shortly after the arrival of a few protesters this morning and they remain closed until further notice,” Shelley said.

On Monday, Minister in the Presidency, Jackson Mthembu, said government was disturbed by the ‘crude racist display by the advertisement’ in question, however acts of lawlessness, including vandalism were of concern.

“We remain committed to the values of democracy. Any form of discrimination or violation of human rights for whatever reason cannot be tolerated, as it undermines the progress made in building a united democratic country,” said Mthembu.
