Paramedics help resuscitate premature baby born on Middlebrook Avenue

The premature baby boy is currently at Addington Hospital in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

NETCARE 911 paramedics were instrumental in saving the life of a 24-week premature baby born on Middlebrook Avenue on Monday afternoon.

According to resident and member of staff at Danville Park Girls’ High School, Cathy Gilmour, her domestic worker’s daughter had earlier complained about tummy pains before giving birth to the little baby boy, named Alupheli (God’s love is never ending).

“I was working from home when Gloria came out calling for help saying her daughter had just given birth. When I went out to help her, I realised the little baby’s breathing was very shallow and immediately called the ambulance and our First Aider from school, Laura Newberry for help.

“Cathy Shaw, another staff member at the school, helped begin resuscitation efforts when paramedics from Netcare arrived. I must say they all did a fantastic job because he was barely responsive throughout the resuscitation efforts and they managed to save his life which is just incredible,” Gilmour said

Alupheli was taken to Addington Hospital where is currently in neonatal ICU.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, the little boy weighs 900 grams.

“The teacher from the school performed CPR on the baby until our paramedics arrived and we found him unresponsive. Advance life support intervention was needed and we managed to revive him. Despite his weight and size, he is doing very well and is currently in neonatal ICU,” Herbst said.
