Call for speed humps following crash on Adelaide Tambo Drive

RESIDENTS living on Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington) in Durban North have implored the Ethekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to consider at implementing traffic calming measures to curb the speeding on the busy residential road.

The call for speed humps comes after a recent crash where a local resident’s vehicle was deemed a write off as she tried to exit her driveway.

The particular section of concern is the dip on Adelaide Tambo Drive where there have been numerous accidents, near-misses and a daily flouting of speed limits explained residents.

Grant Westbrook, whose wife was lucky to escape serious injury in the accident, said residents have had enough.

“The residents living within the areas approaching both sides and within the dip just before Old Mill Way, have had enough of the inaction from the relevant authorities with regard to the ever increasing incidence of irresponsible drivers approaching this dip at dangerously high speeds. Numerous attempts to request traffic calming measures have been made over the years, from frequently positioned speed traps, to requests for speed bumps to be installed. Speed traps are great while they last and we have seen them come and go and now seem to be have become something of the past.

“The requests for speed bumps are rejected based on ancient regulations established when vehicles probably never could exceed the 60 km/h limit. There have been three accidents in the vicinity of the dip since the beginning of the year and all with the potential to cause a fatality. We’ve even heard some cars scrape the bottom of their cars from the speed they either enter or exit the dip. We all feel that our safety leaving our homes is increasingly being compromised and we are united in saying enough is enough,” Westbrook said.
