Be vigilant at ATMs, warns Redhill resident

According to SABRIC, the South African Banking Risk Information Centre, criminals often attempt to confuse bank customers and in the ensuing confusion, steal your pin or your bank card.

A REDHILL resident has warned others to be vigilant around ATMs after he nearly fell victim to card cloning on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road).

The resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was using an ABSA ATM on Friday last week at about 7.15am when he was approached by a man claiming he’d not completed his transaction.

“When I arrived at the ATM I noticed a man behind me but I remained vigilant and completed my transaction. The machine is situated inside a service station and I decided to buy a few items when I was approached by a man. He told me that I hadn’t completed my transaction. When I looked at the screen on the machine it was flashing and asking for a number.

“He was insistent on me putting my card back into the machine and putting in my pin. A second man then showed up and remonstrated his impatience saying he too needed to use the machine and insisted I put my card back into the ATM and complete the transaction. I was extremely wary because I know about card cloning techniques and the appearance of the second man who I felt was an accomplice gave me the red alert. I immediately declined and walked away from the machine,” he said.

The resident said the men then both left the service station shop and drove off in a silver VW Polo Evo.

“I just want to warn people to be extremely vigilant especially at ATMs and to refuse any help or be wary of these tactics,” he said.
