Gateway store robbed by armed gang

The staff were tied up in the robbery while the suspects ransacked the store.

DURBAN North police are searching for a gang of armed men involved in the robbery of the Vodacom store at Gateway on Tuesday evening.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the station, the robbery took place just after 4.30pm.

“Two suspects entered the shop wearing caps and face masks and produced firearms. They ordered the staff to get into a backroom. Two more suspects then arrived and the staff were tied up with cable ties.

“The gang then removed cell phones, laptops and game consoles. After ransacking the shop, the suspects then fled on foot out the main entrance. There were no injuries in the robbery and no arrests have yet been made,” he said.

Gateway marketing manager, Michelle Shelley confirmed the robbery had taken place.

“The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of merchandise. Centre security responded to the scene immediately, followed shortly thereafter by the SAPS. The safety and security of our shoppers and tenants is of utmost importance to Gateway and the centre is working closely with the SAPS to assist with the investigation. No injuries were sustained during the incident,” Shelley said.
