Suspect removes garage roof tiles in Durban North theft incident

The suspect was seen fleeing the premises of the Beachway resident's home.

IT’S by no means a conventional method of a theft but a suspect removed the tiles of a roof on Saturday in order to gain access to a Durban North garage.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the victim was woken up by his alarm system at about 6am.

“The victim, who lives on Beachway, walked out of his house to investigate why his alarm had tripped. He spotted a suspect fleeing his premises carrying a plastic bag. He later discovered the suspect had removed several roof tiles from his garage before stealing a radio from his car. These types of cases are uncommon however we have seen incidents using this type of modus operandi where thieves remove roof tiles in order to access homes or offices. A case of burglary has been opened,” he said.

In a separate incident, two men were arrested on Umgeni Road last week after being spotted trespassing on the roof of a business premises.

Reaction officers from Blue Security surrounded the building and prevented the suspects from making their getaway.

The men were arrested once they came down from the roof. It is unclear whether the suspects were considering the same modus operandi.
