La Lucia doctor shines with gold medal award

Raeesa Bhorat was awarded the Suzman Medal 2019 and the Asher Dubb medal 2019.

LA LUCIA resident, Dr Raeesa Bhorat, a senior registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine based at King Edward VIII hospital, was recently awarded two gold medals for her outstanding achievement in the Fellowship of the College of Physicians (FCP) examinations.

A student from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Bhorat took first place in the examination written by candidates from all medical schools in South Africa including other African countries.

The Senate of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) who oversee the examinations awarded Bhorat the Suzman Medal 2019 and the Asher Dubb medal 2019 for distinguished results in the FCP examination.

She has been working at the King Edward VIII hospital over the past four years as part of her training programme after graduating as a physician from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2013.

While facing the Covid-19 pandemic as a young doctor has been a challenge, Bhorat encouraged the community to focus on positives amidst this time of constant flux.

“Covid-19 has placed immense stress on the healthcare system. There’s so much we don’t know about the virus, there’s so much uncertainty and with new research happening every day, guidelines are always changing. But it has been encouraging to see how everyone I work with is trying to mitigate the burden of the disease as best they can. It’s a real privilege to be a part of that and to contribute in a small way,” she said.

She said her parents inspired her to study medicine. Her father, Professor Ismail Bhorat is an internationally renowned sub specialist in foetal-maternal medicine, and mother, Nazreen Bhorat is a pharmacist.

“Just to know that the science exists to help other people, was always remarkable to me, so I’ve always wanted to study medicine,” she said.

Bhorat graduated cum laude for her medical degree with distinctions in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Internal Medicine and Integrated Surgical Practice and was also a member of the esteemed Golden Key International Honour Society at UKZN.
