Redhill road collapse worsens after yet another burst water pipe

Residents have called on the City to replace the old asbestos pipes along the section of the road which has led to the damage.

RESIDENTS of Heather Grove say the structural integrity of their road is under threat of a major collapse.

This comes after a further collapse of a section of the residential road in Redhill last week.

Two weeks ago, a water leak caused the lower half of the road, near the intersection of Effingham Road to cave in, leaving five residents trapped in their homes and unable to use their driveways.

According to residents this is the fourth time the road had experienced some sort of structural collapse in the last 18 months.

They have called on the City to replace the old asbestos pipes along the section of the road which has led to the damage.

Just days after the City restored water supply and fixed a persistent leak, another burst further along Heather Grove caused a secondary collapse affecting another resident.

Fahim Ball, whose driveway borders the initial collapse, said he is deeply concerned for the safety of his family and his neighbours.

“The City had begun filling in the sections damaged by the first collapse when a section of the water pipe, further up the road burst, leading to a torrent of water gushing downhill. It was like a river at the time and any section that had been filled in by the roads department was washed away. Now there are two sections of the road surface that have been severely compromised.

“We anticipate more collapses until the City can replace all the pipes along the road. It is pointless tarring the road without first fixing the root cause of the problem. I have sleepless nights about this. I’m deeply concerned for my wife, children and neighbours. Using this road is a safety hazard at this point. We aren’t sure what is being planned but the road is now out of commission for almost two weeks and we’ve received no communication as to what the plan is going forward,” he said.
