Where there’s ‘wool’ there’s a way for Durban North baby home

THE Baby Home in Durban North is collecting knitted beanies for newborn and premature babies at the King Edward Hospital.

Joanne Teunissen of The Baby Home said she heard about the need for beanies via social media.

“I was tagged in a Facebook post on the Durban North Neighbours Facebook group about a week or two ago where a doctor from King Edward Hospital had posted asking for help with knitting beanies for the premature babies at the hospital. I then shared the post to our Baby Home page as we have lots of volunteers and supporters who knit and enjoy helping. Since we are still not able to have visitors I thought it would be a nice way to get people involved,” she said.

While Teunissen delivered about 30 beanies and a few blankets to the hospital recently, she said there isn’t a set target.

“This is actually an ongoing need as when new babies are born they are going to need the beanies. It is something we can hopefully help with regularly going forward, thanks to the generosity of the community,” she said.

The collection is not limited to beanies and community members can assist by knitting or sponsoring wool toward the cause.

“After chatting to the doctor we have found out that there are other things that can be knitted or crocheted like little socks and mittens for the babies. So there are a few options of things that people can make,” she said.

“If there are people who want to help they could sponsor wool that can be distributed to people who want to knit but cannot afford to buy the wool themselves. We would be able to distribute the wool donations,” added Teunissen.
