Glenhills homes targeted in crime spike

One road in particular, Peach Place, has seen an up upsurge in incidents.

RESIDENTS of homes and complexes in the Glenhills area say they are under siege by criminals. In the past two months, several incidents of thefts, break-ins and trespassing have been reported to the Greenwood Park SAPS and local ward councillor, Pete Graham.

One road in particular, Peach Place, has seen an up upsurge in incidents. Residents say there are almost daily transgressions of criminals hopping fences.

Northglen News spoke to a number of residents who voiced their concern over the crime spike. One resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said his complex was being targeted. At the centre of the issue is a green belt between the homes and Rinaldo Road.

“We have a five month old baby and we recently had a number of baby clothes stolen by the criminals canvassing the area. I know of several residents within our complex who have fallen victim to the criminals targeting the area. I’m also on a WhatsApp group and there is almost a daily occurrence of a criminal incidents occurring for the past six months, and particularly since lockdown level 3 was announced. We believe there are criminal elements within the Malacca Road Informal Settlement and that is where we feel the crime is emanating from,” he said.

Another resident, Kerry Glass, who lives in the same complex said she too had noticed a spike in crime levels.

“We’ve all done everything we can to secure our homes to prevent incidents of house robbery and crime but the criminals are still somehow getting into our complexes and homes. We have two rows of thick razor wire running the length of our complex but the criminals either cut through or fence hop to get into other homes. I feel the Greenwood Park SAPS need to up their patrols and identify where the criminals are coming from,” she said.

Jenny Sole, who also lives in the area, said the crime spike has been evident.

“There is almost an incident per day on the crime WhatsApp group for the area. It’s getting scary for many of us. I would like to see more involvement from the SAPS and the eThekwini Municipality to address the issue,” she said.
