Karate president urges caution over reopening too quickly

His comments follow the recent announcements by Minister of Sport and Recreation, Nathi Mthethwa of further easing of contact sports of the level three restrictions.

KARATE South Africa (KSA) National all styles Karate federation president, Sonny Pillay has cautioned karate instructors not to rush and open karate clubs without considering Covid-19 safety regulations.

His comments follow the recent announcements by Minister of Sport and Recreation, Nathi Mthethwa of further easing of contact sports of the level three restrictions.

“I urge instructors and coaches to ensure that they are well informed of the Covid-19 regulations before training restarts. KSA will not leave anything to chance and will act against any karate instructor that is not compliant and is found placing its athletes lives at risk,” he said.

Pillay said KSA, who are official custodians of all karate in South Africa have a responsibility to ensure the karate fraternity does not add to the current stats of Covid-19 especially given that a spike in the number of infections is predicted over the next few weeks

“Our organisation has made an official submission to the department of sports for 400 karate clubs to reopen ensuring that our athletes can go back to training. I also urge instructors, coaches and clubs who are outside the national structures to apply to KSA (official karate body) for membership,” he said.
