Durban North pilates fundraiser tackles pollution and poverty

The class will be held via Zoom and participants will need to sign up through the Mind Body App.

A DURBAN North based pilates studio will host a 55 minute pilates class at 9.30am on Saturday, 27 June to raise funds for local NPO, Litter4Tokens.

The class is offered on a donation basis and all proceeds will go toward Litter4Token’s #MovetoFeed campaign.

Project manager for Litter4Tokens, Lindsay Hopkins said the NPO was started in 2015 with the goal of reducing waste in the environment while also giving communities a way to provide for themselves.

Members of the community collect recyclable materials and bring them to the Litter4Tokens centre.

Their recycling is weighed and exchanged for tokens which are used as currency to purchase clothing and food items in the Litter4Tokens trading shop.

“Through lockdown, I’ve been connecting with so many people who are willing to offer relief to those in need. During lockdown, we have not been able to collect litter and it’s great that we can start involving communities in cleaning up the environment and installing pride in the community,” said Hopkins.

Sarah Marshall, Peach Pilates instructor and Durban North resident, said: “I love their whole set up. I’ve always been a big recycler myself. I think its good that they are doing something for the environment. At a time like this with Covid-19, I think we all need to be supporting the community and people who aren’t eating. Litter4Tokens aims to feed the community and also educate – it’s such a wonderful link,” she said.

The class will be held via Zoom and participants will need to sign up through the Mind Body App.

“All that’s needed is something to lie on like a mat – something thick enough to support your spine – and a stable internet connection. We won’t use pilates props in the class, so it makes it easier for everyone to join in,” said Marshall.

She added that the class will be suitable for all ages and abilities.

“What I love about pilates is that it works for everyone. It’s going to strengthen you if you are feeling weak, but it’s also going to challenge you if you’re feeling strong.

“You will work at your own level – it’s for everyone. All exercises can be modified for you if you have a knee injury or a neck injury for example,” she said.

Donations can be made via EFT or SnapScan through the details on the Peach Pilates website.
