Union contributes to UKZN’s Hardship Fund

The UKZN Hardship Fund is aimed at addressing issues of food insecurity and menstrual hygiene for students and staff.

UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal Staff Union (UKSU) has made a generous donation to the University’s Hardship Fund.

As a show of solidarity in a time of Covid-19 pandemic, UKSU Executive members took the decision to make the generous donation of R20 000.

The in-house union has a long history of philanthropy by supporting students in need through various initiatives including the ‘Back-A-Buddy’ and R67 for Mandela Month fundraising initiatives of the UKZN Foundation.

The Chairperson of UKSU, Raymond Parkies, said UKSU Executive members did not hesitate to approve the donation, on behalf of UKSU members, towards the Hardship Fund.

“As a union, we have to support and protect our UKZN community members, staff and students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We firmly believe in living up to our mission: defending and advancing the interests of UKZN staff,” said Parkies.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Nana Poku was deeply appreciative and thanked UKSU for their generous contribution. Poku was the first to contribute to the fund – pledging a third of his monthly salary for the next three months.

He called on all UKZN stakeholders including staff, students, suppliers, service providers, funders, alumni, the donor community, friends of the University and all other loyal stakeholders to contribute to the fund.
