Sunningdale resident raises funds on the run

The Grade 3 learner at Chelsea Preparatory School recently raised more than R15 500 for the various communities around Durban by walking three hours for seven consecutive days.

FOR Sunningdale resident, Luke Peschl, putting the needs of others first has been one of his main priorities this lockdown. The Grade 3 learner at Chelsea Preparatory School recently raised more than R15 500 for the various communities around Durban by walking three hours for seven consecutive days.

In all the nine-year-old completed a distance of 100 kilometres to raise funds for those most affected by the coronavirus pandemic. His fundraising efforts also saw a number of food packs, 85 in all, go towards the communities of KwaMashu and KwaDabeka.

The bulk of the mammoth 100 kilometres was walked within the confines of his complex while the last few kilometres were completed on the road during the ease in restrictions.

Luke’s dad, Shaun, who works as programme director of the GO!Durban Cycle Academy which offers cycling, academic support and life skills to uplift disadvantaged youth helped complete the distance with his son in order to raise funds to distribute .

The duo have partnered with Spar Umhlanga and Park Square to put the food packs together. The food packs costing R185 provides enough essential groceries to feed a family of four for two weeks and through the process the duo has raised more than R 15 500, a total of 85 packs.

Luke said he hoped his feat would inspire others to follow suit.

“I’ve never done anything like this before but I wanted to help those in need. My goal was to reach 100 packs and the initiative is still ongoing so I’m hopeful we can reach that mark. It was great having my family behind me the whole time and walking with me. I hope I can inspire others to do something similar because it’s important to help others and give back,” he said.
