City of Durban offers rates relief to guesthouses

A rebate of up to 50 per cent is on offer to Bed and Breakfast establishments.

IN a bid to keep B&Bs and guesthouses afloat in Durban, special rates relief will be offered.

A report outlining the relief aid was tabled at an online Executive Committee meeting held on 26 May.

According to the report, the rebates will be granted to establishments which have suffered more than a 60 per cent revenue loss.

Property owners will  need to apply for rates relief on a prescribed form.

“The rates relief will be effective retrospectively from 1 April 2020 until the lockdown levels are relaxed to level three or lower, with the rates relief terminating on the last day of the month immediately following the month in which a lower alert level declaration occurs in terms of the Disaster Management Act 2002,” read the report.

Rates relief will not exceed 50 per cent of the current rates. The application window closes on 30 June 2020.
