Two injured in botched Gateway robbery

Two men were treated for head injuries, suspected spinal injuries, pelvic injuries and chest injuries.

TWO suspects were injured after falling from the first floor at Gateway shopping centre on Wednesday as they fled the scene of an attempted robbery.

Michelle Shelley, Marketing Manager for Gateway confirmed that an attempted shoplifting took place at a retail store at approximately 3pm.

“The suspects attempted to flee the scene and in doing so, injured themselves. Medical assistance was immediately sought, and the suspects were transported to hospital.The matter is subject to an official investigation and any further details regarding this incident should be sought through the SAPS. The mall is operating as normal under the Level 4 restrictions,” she said.

Shawn Herbst, spokesperson for Netcare 911, said two men were treated for injuries including head injuries, suspected spinal injuries, pelvic injuries, chest injuries and fractures.

“One adult male sustained serious injuries and was treated on scene by an advanced life support paramedic. The second patient sustained moderate injuries and was treated on scene. The third patient was detained by SAPS,” he said.

“Security had given chase after they were notified what was happening. Three men then exited the parking area where they jumped from the first floor,” added Herbst.
