Durban running club supports elderly with buff donations

In all Crusaders Running Club donated 52 buffs to the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged.

THE Crusaders Running Club recently donated more than 50 running buff masks to the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged in Morningside.

A buff also known as a ‘neck gaiter’ is a tube of elastic fabric that you can wear in lots of different ways.

It’s commonly used by athletes from different sporting disciplines and according to some walkers and runners, the light fabric is easy to breathe through than a mask.

Tom Carey, Crusaders Running Club secretary, said it was important to donate the buffs due to statistics showing that the coronavirus has a higher fatality rate among older people.

“We support various causes through our club fundraisers and we had noticed there is a shortage of masks and PPE in certain sectors. Our chairman, Mark Reeves knows one of the residents at the home, Manny Kisten, who has run the Comrades and is very active. So he decided why not support the residents of the home so we donated 52 buffs the club had in surplus.

“The feedback from members within our club is the buff makes it easier to breathe through when exercising and also protects you from possible exposure. The feedback from residents and the staff has been heartwarming which is a great,” Carey said.

Dudley Fortune, CEO of the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged, said any help was welcomed by the home.

“This means so much to us because we have a number of active residents who walk around the premises. It’ll also bring some colour in as the buffs are bright and vibrant. We have given out masks to every resident here but we will distribute these to those who are active and who are in need. One must never look at the size of the donation but the thought and support behind it. We are grateful to Crusaders Running Club for their support during this time,” he said.
