SASSA to stagger grant payments in May

The new payment dates aim to prevent crowding at pay sites.

IN a bid to avoid crowding, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced that from May 2020, disability and old-age grants will be paid from the 4th of the month and other grants will be paid from the 6th of the month onwards.

The South African Post Office announced the date change on Tuesday in a Facebook post.

“This is to avoid crowding at pay sites. Stay safe,” read the post.

In a statement issued on 11 April, SASSA addressed ‘fake news’ about who would qualify for a food parcel grant.

“During the national lockdown period there are a lot of people who are desperate for government assistance and require food parcels. There is also a lot of fake news circulating about who qualifies, how to get help and unfortunately these fake messages have incorrect contact details,” read the statement.

SASSA’s KZN region has introduced two dedicated telephone numbers for applications for food parcels to address caller’s challenges in getting through the SASSA national Toll Free Number: 0800 60 10 11. SASSA will issue Social Relief of Distress (SRD) in the form of food parcels as a temporary provision of assistance intended for persons in such dire need that they are unable to meet their or their families’ most basic needs.

To apply for a food parcel, call the SASSA KZN Regional Office: 033 846 3400 or WhatsApp: 0716071514. Both these lines were accessible from Tuesday, 14 April.
