Spread cheer to brighten lockdown urges Durban North resident

Angela Walter, an educator at Virginia Preparatory School, has started the hashtag #SALockdownSaturdays where she encourages South Africans to dress up in their SA colours and make the country a better place.

A DURBAN North resident has started a movement to help others in need during the nationwide coronavirus lockdown.

Angela Walter, an educator at Virginia Preparatory School, has started the hashtag #SALockdownSaturdays where she encourages South Africans to dress up in their SA colours and make the country a better place.

Walter said residents could either donate to a worthy cause, plant a vegetable garden, or practice the spirit of Ubuntu by checking on neighbours and their needs.

“My daughter, Chloe, and I were having fun in our SA kits and the idea came to me, ‘why not dress patriotically and make a change where you can’. So that’s how #SALockdownSaturdays was born, it was a way to also help families bond during this nationwide lockdown while promoting unity.

“I challenged a number of learners from my school who all obliged with their awesome photos and I felt this would also be a way to highlight extremely worthy causes. My daughter felt we needed to do something for the Flag Animal Farm down the KZN north coast. We hope that with each passing weekend of the lockdown more will be done for those in need,” she explained.

While the movement only started over the weekend, already more than R2 000 had been raised.

“I’ve been inspired by what some people have been doing like my fellow resident, Kerryn Rodwell who started a project called Rural Community Supplies South Africa who help deliver food and supplies to rural communities,” she said.

Walter also praised the work of another educator at the school, Gavin Skevington, who is raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
