Durban North woman arrested for bootlegging alcohol from home

An undisclosed amount of money as well as a speed point were seized in the arrest.

A ROUTINE roadblock on the M4 Ruth First Highway led to the arrest of two people and the seizure of close to R50 000 worth of alcohol from a Durban North home on Monday evening.

What is more, police charged a local woman for allegedly selling alcohol during the nationwide lockdown from her home in Durban North.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the station, police were conducting a routine roadblock on the M4 when they stopped a driver who was found in possession of several bottles of alcohol, which included, brandy, whisky and other spirits.

“He was also in possession of two cases of beer. The suspect was questioned as to where he bought the alcohol and he gave information to the officers on the ground. An intelligence operation was then formed and our officers proceeded to a home in the Durban North area, where a second suspect, a woman, was charged and arrested. Alcohol close to the value of around R50 000 was seized as well as speed point and an undisclosed amount of cash. We later found out the money had been made through the sales of alcohol on that day,” he said.

Deokaran said the man was charged under the Disaster Management Act for Regulation 11 B (1) (a) (i), failure to confine oneself in place of residence.

The second suspect was charged for selling of non essential products (liquor) during the lockdown period.

Deokaran emphasised that police would not hesitate to arrest those who are not complying with the regulations.

“Management also commended members involved in the arrest for their diligence during the planned operations carried out during this period. Captain Sbusiso Mhlangu and warrant officer Porky Singh as well as members from Durban north crime intelligence were instrumental in making this arrest,” he said.
