Durban North baby home calls for charity rather than Coronavirus ‘panic’

The Baby Home encouraged people to choose charity over stockpiling and panic-buying.

THE Baby Home in Durban North has called on the community to remember the less fortunate amidst coronavirus concerns.

Jo Teunissen, a crisis parent at the home encouraged others to choose charity over stockpiling and panic-buying.

“Rather than going out and panic-buying, let’s spare a thought for those who cannot afford to go out and stockpile, those who are still two weeks from pay day, the elderly who can’t get to the shops, your staff who are still working full time to keep your business running,” she said.

The home lead by example by providing food packs for their staff members.

“We made packs with the essentials such as rice, maze, tinned food and samp –  basic items to get them through. We also included disinfectant- items that are being ‘panic-bought’ at the shops,” she said.

She called on the community to follow suit.

“Instead of stocking up on things you probably won’t even use, why don’t you rather spread the love and make up a food pack for someone who cannot afford it, or are unable do it for themselves at this stage,” she added.

The home is accepting donations, although, they are limiting visitations. Donors will be allowed to drop off items at the gate of the baby home, to ensure the babies are kept safe.

“We are running low on size 6 nappies and baby food. Also with everyone staying at home and not going to school, we are looking for more fresh food and vegetables to ensure a strong immune system,” said Teunissen.

The Baby Home offers care to abandoned or orphaned babies and  babies waiting to be adopted.
