Residents call for urgent pothole repairs in uMhlanga

Residents say motorists and pedestrians are at risk due to the large potholes on Newlands Drive.

UMHLANGA residents have urged the eThekwini Municipality to fix two large potholes, on two different stretches of Newlands Drive, saying they pose a danger to motorists.

The first pothole, situated on a speed hump on Newlands Drive has been filled with sand to stop motorists from damaging their vehicles.

The second is situated further up the road where Newlands Drive merges with the M4 Ruth First Highway.

Northglen News paid a visit to the site last week and found within a 30 minute period that 15 out 25 cars driving along the road hit the pothole at speed.

To draw attention to the problem, Campbell Drive resident, Warren Eisele, put in a plant to warn motorists about the issue.  The plant, was later removed, however, Eisele believes if the potholes aren’t filled soon it may lead to an accident.

“This pothole near the intersection of Newlands Drive and Campbell Drive is very bad. One of the people I know burst her tyre after hitting the pothole. Luckily she had run flat tyres however it cost her thousands of rands in damages because her rim was buckled. The reason I placed the pot plant in the pothole was to draw attention to the problem and warn motorists. Most of the drivers from the area are aware of the pothole and swerve to avoid it but others hit it at frightening speeds.

“Because that section of Newlands Drive is a two-way I’m concerned that in an effort to avoid the pothole a vehicle may swerve into the oncoming lane and there could be an accident. The holes were marked for repair for the City but it has been months and nothing has been done,” he said.
