Briardene residents want rubbish skip installed

Residents have suggested the City looks at putting in a skip to make it easier for waste pickers to collect the rubbish.

RESIDENTS of Briardene Informal Settlement have asked the City to consider placing a rubbish skip in the area for large heaps of rubbish being left to decompose on Clara Place and Krishna Road.

Local resident, Don Shange, said the City had appointed a private contractor to remove residents’ waste from the area but often times, items were either left behind to decompose further or ignored completely leaving two mounds of earth covered in rubbish.

He also expressed his anger at the rubbish, that had not been collected since November last year.

“It was unhygienic and there were flies everywhere because the rubbish hadn’t been collected. Then last week the contractor came to remove some of the rubbish after months and still left several items of litter behind. They’ve also in the past burned rubbish to reduce it but all that does is leave the remains at the settlement. Several residents have suggested the City looks at putting in a skip to curb this problem which could make it easier for waste pickers to collect the rubbish.

“This is a regular problem in the settlement and unfortunately and inevitably, there is plenty of rubbish left behind that is not taken away. Residents and the ward committee, who are helping us, feel the skip is the best solution to the problem. That way when the contractor, who normally comes once a week, will just have to load the skip in place and remove the rubbish leaving the two areas litter free,” he said.
