VIDEO: Porcupine released by CROW flourishes
The juvenille porcupine was rescued from a stormwater drain where he was found alone.
AFTER spending close to a year at the Centre for the Rehibilitation of Wildlife (CROW), resident porcupine, Groot has been released.
Found alone in a stormwater drain, last year, Groot was admitted to CROW in February. Since his release, the porcupine has adjusted to his new environment said CROW’s marketing manager, Lana Bartholomew.
“We recently conducted post-release monitoring and we are incredibly happy to report that Groot is doing fantastic and has adjusted well to being in the wild,” she said.

The juvenille porcupine was about five days old when he was rescued from the stormwater drain. He weighed 530 grams.
“He was taken to the lower south coast SPCA who then contacted us and we collected the little one. After being with us for over nine months and sailing through his rehabilitation programme, Groot was released late last year. Sue-Ann Shutte, Senior Clinic Nurse and primary caregiver to Groot was elated to see him being released back into the wild where he belongs,” added Bartholomew.
CROW’s mission is to rehabilitate and release wildlife back into natural habitats.
