Paddlers tackle Dusi for a purpose

Durban North resident, Terry Galloway and Hillcrest resident, Nicolette Crozier are tackling the Dusi for two worthy fundraisers this year.

THE Dusi Canoe Marathon is a one-of-a-kind race and once you’ve completed one, it changes you forever. That’s the sentiment of Durban North resident, Terry Galloway, who this years, is partnering with Hillcrest resident, Nicolette Crozier to tackle the marathon for a purpose.

While the upcoming marathon will be Galloway’s 30th, he is planning on completing the race in a K2 canoe to raise funds for Samantha Boardman, who lost her leg to bone cancer in June last year. The duo are hoping to raise funds to help get Boardman a prosthetic leg. They are also raising funds for Husky Rescue KZN that rescues stray and unwanted huskies.

“Last year I completed the Dusi with my wife, Tracy, where we also raised funds for Husky Rescue KZN. Both Nicolette and I felt it was important to give back because the Dusi is all about community spirit and camaraderie. She will be at the forefront of our minds as we tackle the Dusi at the end of February.

“Once you’ve completed your first Dusi, you are hooked for life. I think the whole vibe of the Dusi is incredible and that’s why we’ve chosen to do this race for a purpose,” he said.

Crozier concurred saying she was also completing the race for her father, who is ill in hospital.

“As a qualified a microbiologist and biochemist, cancer is one of my fields of interest. So it’s a cause very close to me. My father is ill in hospital at the moment and I’m also doing this race for him,” she said.

As far as race strategy is concerned, the duo aren’t interested in chasing a specific time but rather having fun out on the water.

“We are focused ahead of the Dusi. We’ve both been training five days of week. Both Terry and I share the same work ethic so working out and keeping fit has been a common goal. I also feel we paddle well together on the river and we are both looking forward to tackling the Dusi,” she said.
