Club ‘bowled over’ as member nears 100

Northlands Bowling Club member Trish Campbell celebrated her 98th birthday on the green last week.

IT was a special day for the Northlands Bowling Club when member, Trish Campbell celebrated her 98th birthday on the green last week.

Club chairperson, Derek Rye praised Campbell’s bowling skill as he handed over a bouquet of roses for her birthday.

“She’s a wonderful person and we are proud to have her as part of the club. She’s also a good bowler,” he said.

While she joined the Northlands club in May, 2007, Campbell said that prior to this, she bowled for 17 years at the Silverton Bowling Club in Berea and five years at the Botanic Gardens Bowling Club which she joined in 1951.
With some 30 years on the green, Campbell can’t seem to quit.

“Each time I think I should stop, I end up bowling again. I think, ‘well I’ll just go and watch,’ and before I know it, I am bowling again,” she said. Time spent on the green has given Campbell a sense of self.”

“It’s one thing that can give you purpose in life once you get older. As a bowler, you regain your independence from being grandma, aunty or mother, I am suddenly Trish again,” she said.

Campbell has also found a loving family in the club.

“You become a family. I have two families, one at home and one here,” she said.
