Hundreds of stray animals admitted to SPCA over festive season

Pet owners are urged to visit the SPCA to check if their pet is there or call the kennels department during office hours from Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm or on Saturday from 8am until 12.30pm.

OVER the festive season, the Durban & Coast SPCA opened its doors to lost pets and stray animals. Marketing manager for the organisation, Tanya Fleischer said the period from 24 December to 2 January, saw close to 300 stray and unwanted cats, kittens, puppies and dogs being admitted.

“Of this 33 per cent of animals were surrendered as unwanted pets, with 67 per cent being strays,” she added.

Many of the animals remain at the SPCA.

“Only 13 animals have been claimed by their owners. Others are still waiting for their owners or are waiting for new homes,” said Fleischer.

She urged pet owners to visit the SPCA to check if their pet is there or call the kennels department during office hours from Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm or on Saturday from 8am until 12.30pm.

Pet owners can also complete a lost pet report on 031 579 6524/6.

To keep pets safe Fleischer recommends micro chipping.

“Please ensure your pets are micro chipped as this is the best and easiest way for them to get back to you in the event that they get lost. You can book with the SPCA to have your pet’s micro chipped,” she said.

The SPCA is also calling for donations of pet food to help them cope with the high number of animals they have taken in.
